At 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 2, Brooks Memorial Library and the Climate Café are pleased to welcome back Dr. Edward Cameron, a global climate change advocate with many years of experience working with the EU and other international organizations to to support bold actions towards the  pursuit of a low-carbon, climate-resilient and inclusive global economy.

In this presentation, he will present the key lessons from the IPCC 1.5C report and outline a vision for building a low-carbon, climate-resilient and inclusive economy in Vermont, throughout the United States, and across the globe. He will look beyond challenges towards climate change, and explore how each of us can use this moment to build a just and sustainable world for all.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will wrap up its year with lease agreements and tire removal. They will also hear from the Brattleboro Country Club regarding a recent liquor violation before giving them a new liquor license.

The Energy Committee might be reduced in size, Experienced Goods will extend their lease at the parking garage, motions will be assigned, and you might be appointed to a committee. You can always bring up other matters during public participation.

Brattleboro Town Schoolboard Informational Forum and District Caucuses

Brattleboro Town Schoolboard will hold a pre-representative town meeting information forum on Wednesday, March 20 at Green Street School beginning at 6:30 PM in the Gym.  At 6:00 p.m., town meeting members of each district will be available to meet with constituents to offer residents an opportunity to share their views and discuss articles to be voted on at the annual meeting.  Also, at that time, Districts 1 and 3 will be accepting nominations to fill town meeting member vacancies for 1 year.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Russell Malone Quartet

The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes guitarist Russell Malone to its stage on March 16th. He will appear with his established quartet including pianist Rick Germanson, bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Anwar Marshall. Perhaps best known for his Grammy nominated work with vocalist Diana Krall, Malone is one of the leading guitarists on the jazz scene today.

Russell Malone is a hard-swinging guitarist also known for his evocative ballad playing. His signature sound is a full-bodied tone with long, fat, sustained notes, reminiscent of one of his early heroes, George Benson. According to his website, “on a school night when [he] should have been in bed” in 1975, he saw George Benson play “incredible things” on a TV special called “Seven Comes Eleven.” Malone quickly purchased two of Benson’s recordings, The George Benson Cookbook and Benson Burner,” which, along with Wes Montgomery’s Smokin’ At the Half Note and Boss Guitar, then set him on what he says is “a course that I have not deviated from.”

Opposed to 1% Local Option Sales Tax

I would like to thank our Town Meeting Reps and the Brattleboro Selectboard for reviewing and reconsidering the support of the 1% Local Option Sales Tax. 

I would like to express my opposition to this as a resident that has owned and operated small businesses here in Brattleboro spanning over the last 13 years. At this point it is no secret that running a business in Southern Vermont is a very difficult thing to do. And yes, it may seem that one penny on one dollar or bringing the Brattleboro sales tax from 6% up to 7% may not be a big deal but it really is. Right now, with every business in town competing with online retailers like Amazon, or watching potential customers go across the river to tax free New Hampshire, I feel strongly that this is not a beneficial option for the town nor to the businesses in Brattleboro.

Information Session on RGS Artist Trip to Tuscany To Be Held March 21

An informational meeting for anyone interested in joining the River Gallery School art trip to Tuscany in October will be held on Thursday, March 21, 6:00 p.m. at the school, 32 Main Street, Brattleboro. Those interested in learning more about the tour are invited to attend.

The trip will take place from October 4–11, 2019 in Pienza, Italy, with a three-day, optional stay prior to the tour in Cortona from October 1–3. The tour is sponsored by the River Gallery School and organized by Travel Fever Tours of Putney.

On Being A Couch Potato

For many years, I thought being a couch potato was a function of personality — some people are couch potatoes, some aren’t.  I even felt virtuous about how much more productive I was not spending hours laying around watching tv.  It never occurred to me to ask why I was so virtuous until I got a sofa myself, one positioned in a living room with a screen in front of it.  Then I knew — my previous self hadn’t been a couch potato because she hadn’t had a couch.

Join the Brattleboro Youth Climate Action Rallies on March 15th

On March 15th, youth across the world, youth will be gathering to focus the attention of local, state and national legislators on protecting our resources and environment. 

Join young people of southern Vermont to demand that our lawmakers work to steer us from climate disaster, and protect our frontline communities who are already suffering the consequences of it. Gather peacefully to share ideas and ensure that future generations can live to experience a healthy natural world. Bring signs, songs, and knowledge. Bring your stories and passions. Bring respectful arguments, and a willingness to listen.

The Stockwell Brothers at Next Stage

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary bluegrass and folk quartet The Stockwell Brothers at the Next Stage Cafe on Saturday, March 16 at 7:00 pm.  To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, JD McCliments Pub will offer an Irish dinner starting at 6:00 pm, while the Stockwells will explore the connections between folk/bluegrass music and the music of Ireland.   

Bruce, Barry, Alan and Kelly Stockwell’s music spans traditional and progressive styles, but their trademark acoustic sound features new singer/songwriter material recast with banjo, alternative rhythms and three-part harmonies.
