Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is offering a free seminar entitled, “Type II Diabetes: Can it be Prevented or Managed?” on Monday, October 21 from 7:00-9:00 PM in the BMH Brew Barry Conference Center.
Diabetes is a continuum of diseases and slowing the progression of insulin resistance is essential to long-term health and well-being. Dr. Ferry, an endocrinologist, will discuss lifestyle and treatment options that can help prevent the disease or allow it to be successfully managed. Additionally, the talk will include a review of the early symptoms of diabetes and what diabetes can mean for your health.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will present a free talk about Lyme disease by Vermont Department of Health Epidemiologist Erica Berl on Monday, October 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the BMH Brew Barry Conference Center.
This presentation will give an overview of Lyme disease in Vermont, examining the organism that causes the disease, as well as the emergence and prevalence of the disease in the state of Vermont. The life cycle of the deer tick will be discussed and, most importantly, strategies to prevent tick bites will be presented.

Latchis Arts is very excited to welcome the community back to the main theatre at our grand re-opening on October 19 at 7:30. We hope 750 of you will join us that night to enjoy the new seats and admire the surroundings. The restored zodiac ceiling is dreamy and the new lighting on the murals is stunning. I am truly grateful for the community-wide love and care for this theatre, built by my family 75 years ago.
Last night the Latchis Arts board of directors held a work bee, tapping in the inscribed brass plates on the arms of the chairs that donors had purchased. Reading the names and phrases of our friends and neighbors gave us a real appreciation for your level of participation. Fully $142,500 is represented by those brass plates scattered throughout the orchestra and balcony. Give yourselves a round of applause!
Brattleboro Memorial Hospital announced Tony Blofson, MD has been hired as Medical Director of , the hospital’s network of primary care providers and medical specialists.
In this role, Blofson will be responsible for leading BMH Physician Group practices and providers through quality initiatives including improved patient access and patient satisfaction, as well as transitions brought on by healthcare reform.
“Our practices have experienced many changes as a group as they have grown over the past few years. Dr. Blofson’s experience and enthusiasm will serve us well as we continue to evolve,” says Bonnie McKellar, Vice President of Physician Services and Business Development at BMH.
BMH Launches 2nd Annual “BEARDS for BMH” Campaign To Raise Awareness of Men’s Health Issues
Throughout the month of November Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) will once again be sponsoring “BEARDS for BMH” to raise awareness of men’s health issues. The campaign is designed to spark conversation about issues such as prostate cancer screening, erectile dysfunction, testicular cancer and other men’s health concerns.

The unofficial word is that all residents were safely evacuated from a 3.5 story apartment complex on Elliot St in Brattleboro that caught fire earlier today (Oct 16, 2013) and burned into the night, but it’s left Brattleboro Town Officials and Emergency Personnel holding the cosmic short straw once more.

There is a huge fire in one of the Elliot St buildings, near Union Hill. I’m hearing skuttlebutt but so far nothing confirmed except that the fire is more than one floor. By the vid Joe Bushey posted on FB, it looks like most of the back of the building is involved. I hope everyone is safe, pets included.

Single lane closure of the passing lanes on I-91 Northbound and Southbound will continue for the week of October 20. The lanes will remain closed over the weekend.
Route 30
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through August 2016. Truck activity on Route 30 will continue for the week of October 20. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently. Flaggers will regulate traffic flow.

A trio of Brattleboro Selectboard members kept town business flowing while simultaneously monitoring the scores of a Red Sox game Tuesday night.
The board heard that liquidated damages might be considered for the Waste Water Treatment Plant project delays, the proposed PACE program guidelines have lingering legal and accounting questions, and signs of climate change might be showing up during public participation.

It reminded me of a strange experience I had on Staten Island more than 30 years ago.
We were in Stapleton, a few miles from our home in St. George. It looked like an ordinary luncheonette — big CocaCola sign — soda fountain counter with a row of round stools that you can spin on, and booths along the wall.
The place was empty, but it was not lunch hour. Carol and I sat down with Grace and Eve at one of the booths.
On Sunday, October 20 at 3 pm, the Brattleboro Music Center presents a recital with faculty members Richard Ullman, guitar, and guest Kristen Carmichael-Bowers, voice, at Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, VT.
For this recital, Ullman revisits some of his favorite pieces from Spanish composer Andrés Segovia’s repertoire. Segovia is considered the father of modern classical guitar and, although his works have fallen out of fashion in recent decades, is credited with popularizing classical guitar music. Segovia was a catalytic figure in granting respectability to the guitar as a serious concert instrument capable of evocativeness and depth of interpretation.
The local farmers are bringing great fall produce to the Wednesday Farmers’ Market–open through the end of October– downtown by the Brattleboro Food Coop from 10-2. Apples and cider, pears, winter squash, garlic and onions, greens and tomatoes, peppers and potatoes, maple syrup and preserves, flower bouquets, humanely-raised pork, and lots more is all downtown on Wednesdays, fresh from our dedicated local growers.
