Remember the Brattleboro Selectboard? It’s been a while.

At Tuesday’s meeting Brattleboro’s PACE district was finally set into action after nearly two years of contract questions and negotiations. The program allows for new ways of financing energy improvements to homes in town.

A Local Emergency Operations Plan was endorsed, rules and goals were approved, the Ebola truck was acknowledged, and many grants and grant applications were approved or accepted.

Establishing an independent artistic personality is a key challenge for most photographers, even more so when their name already conjures up one of the best known figures in the field. For photographers in the second half of the twentieth century, the work of Diane Arbus brought a sea change, the arrival of a significant personal vision which has been characterized as rendering strange the familiar and uncovering the familiar in the strange. Most conversant with the art of the past few decades would recognize her work.
 
For her daughter Amy the first solution was to stay away. She didn’t take up photography seriously until her early twenties. From that point on, however, she has been determined to blaze a path of her own. Today, decades later, we can see where her efforts have taken her.

Raising School Taxes

The Vermont Senate is considering a bill that will provide tax incentives to school that find ways to cooperate with surrounding districts to improve efficiency and student opportunities. The schools in our supervisory union are widely recognized as leaders in these kinds of changes, having begun implementing them a decade ago.

The bill also cuts supports for small schools, and cuts support for schools adjusting to declining numbers of students. Guilford, Putney, Vernon, and the high school district benefit from these supports and will see tax rates increase if they are cut.

Nepal Relief

From a close friend who has lived in Kathmandu for years. One problem with Nepalese relief is that there is substantial graft and one must be very careful about who one donates through. I just received this and want to pass it along. 

Besides Pachak Rinpoche’s relief fund ( Chokgyur Lingpa Foundation), here is another one where the money will go to relief and not to admin. costs. Friend, Chris Kolisch, has written below about a good place to donate for disaster relief here in Nepal:

The family of Oscar Mark Delgado, Sr.  from Johnson, Vermont are looking for someone to provide a home for their adult son, Oscar Delgado, Jr. In the State of Vermont, people are held in prison after their sentences are completed if they can not find a qualified home that the probation officer approves. This results in a high rate of prison over-population in Vermont and it results in sending people to out-of-state prisons because too many people who have already completed their sentences are forced to stay in Vermont prisons because their probation officer will not “qualify” the new residence of the person to be released.

Hebrew School Registration

Time for forsythia and tulips and time to register children for Hebrew school 5776!  At this time we are planning to follow our traditional structure, with an Aleph class for 6-7 year olds, Bet for 8-9 year olds, Gimmel for 9-10 year olds and Dalet for 11-12 year olds, and Hey for children who are 12 and older, have been in our Hebrew school for at least one year, and are planning to become bar- or bat-mitzvah next year.

Classes will meet from 3:45 to 5:45; the b’nai mitzvah class will probably meet from 5:30 to 7:30.  We hope to keep our excellent, experienced, dedicated teaching staff, but we need to know how many students we will have (and their ages and grade in public school) so we can plan staff and space to accommodate all who wish to attend.  We particularly need to know about any new students who might wish to attend.

Sometime in the next 2 weeks I am getting a couch from a house in Brattleboro. I need to have my old couch moved out of my apartment and disposed of- taken to the dump, I guess. Then I need the new couch moved to my house. Looking for recommendations for someone who does short distance moving for a reasonable price and could do it with just a couple of days notice.

I have tried Brattleboro Time Trade but no luck yet.

Two strong bodies needed -both couches are heavy.

“LIBRARY SUPER HEROES“. This fun event, sponsored by Friends of the Library will feature a mural of a friendly town ( much like Brattleboro!) inhabited by many colorful super heroes; flying, sitting and just standing around being..well…super. Emblazoned on their costumes will be the name of a specific craft supply that the children’s room uses for their wonderful, family friendly projects.

Ask-a-Baha’i

Although many have heard of the Baha’i Faith, few know much about the Faith’s history and teachings.

MONTPELIER, VT. At Blodgett Supply in Montpelier today, Rep. Peter Welch met with a broad cross-section of Vermont energy efficiency leaders to outline his efficiency priorities for the new Congress and learn about the latest energy efficiency innovations in Vermont. The roundtable discussion comes on the heels of House approval this week of Welch-authored energy efficiency legislation which President Obama will soon sign into law.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of April 26

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

Night work adjacent to Route 30 will continue this week, but will not affect traffic.

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

While this is an event, it’s such short notice I’m posting it as more of a PSA. in Bradford, VT tomorrow (Sat., 04/24/2015) at 1 pm… this is a story which has not been told as openly as it merits.

Not just history, this is the ongoing situation of the Western Abenaki, the indigenous people who lived – and live – right here. Vermont, the poster child for tolerance and progressive politics, can do better. .
