For the past several years, Friends of Music at Guilford, now in its 47th season, has been presenting an “A Cappella à la Carte” evening as the finale to its annual calendar. This year, the Guilford Chamber Singers are featured in “Melodies Steal Into My Heart,” the musical segment of this Saturday evening’s three-part menu. The setting is Guilford Community Church, just a short distance from Exit 1 off Interstate 91.
The festivities begin at 6 pm with a brief and merry Friends of Music membership meeting. Folks can sign up on the spot and participate in voting for the upcoming year’s board of trustees, as well as symbolically ratify the current board’s actions in the fiscal year just ending. Plans for the 48th annual season of concerts are shared with everyone present.
Travelers from around Windham Country and Vermont can now visit Spain, Holland, Italy and France with Travel Fever Tours, a new company based in Putney. The company specializes in small group tours, each focusing on a theme or activity, such as cycling, birding, art, or the history and culture of a specific location in Europe.
Travel Fever Tours has been founded by long-time Putney residents Cicely Carroll and Bob Lawson who have spent large parts of the past decade living or working in Spain, Italy and Switzerland. After exploring Europe on their own, the two will now be sharing their favorite spots and activities with small groups of up to 12 people.
I read a short report in today’s Brattleboro Reformer about an “assaultive student” at the Austine School who was cited into court for simple assault and disorderly conduct. It’s the second one in recent memory. A previous report sounded much more threatening, and was more detailed, but either way, there’s something that doesn’t sit well with me in reading about police being called for student discipline. As with so many other things, it’s not the way it used to be when I was a kid.
The Brattleboro Retreat, although not recently, has also relied on the police to take authority over unruly or combative youth and there have been past incidents where those youthful patients were tasered into compliance.

An old-time gospel hour is planned in West Dummerston on Sunday June 9th, starting at 10:30 AM. The event, to be held at the Dummerston Community Center, will feature guitar and vocals by Gin Mill Bill. There will be no preacher, and no preaching! Light refreshments will be available. Donations will be accepted for the Community Center’s heating and maintenance fund.The Community Center is located at 150 West St. in West Dummerston village, just off Route 30. Washington, DC. (June 6th, 2013)- After recent reports that the government has been seizing millions of telephone records of US citizens from service providers, Rep. Welch made the following remarks:
“I cannot fathom a reason for the federal government to cast such a wide and indiscriminate net in the name of national security. This confirms the worst fears of those of us who oppose the Patriot Act.
The West Brattleboro Association is raising funds to put up two “Welcome to West Brattleboro” signs, one at either end of the village. These will add to the village’s sense of pride and make the village even more inviting and attractive to both visitors and locals.
To do it right, this will cost about $3,000 per sign, or $6,000 total. To date the Association has raised around $1,400 toward this goal.
WASHINGTON, June 6 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today criticized a secret domestic surveillance program that swept up millions of telephone records on calls by Americans who were not suspected of any wrongdoing.
A court order demanding the records be turned over was obtained under a controversial interpretation of a provision in the so-called Patriot Act, which Sanders voted against when it was first enacted in 2001 and when it was reauthorized in 2006 and 2011.
“As one of the few members of Congress who consistently voted against the Patriot Act, I expressed concern at the time of passage that it gave the government far too much power to spy on innocent United State citizens and provided for very little oversight or disclosure. Unfortunately, what I said turned out to be exactly true.

It was filmed over 8 months ago based on my hand out submitted to a site selction process requested by concerned citizens which was denied by the selectboard in March 2011. Please excuse some of the repetition on points and reasons why we think ULMP just may be the best skatepark location, this was our first attempt at filming. The Upper Living Memorial Park is under utilized in the summer and we think would be an almost ideal location for an expansive skatepark accommodating many various skate type activities within our public recreation park designated for such use and could tastefully coexist with present alternate season ski slope without too much interference.

The Brattleboro Historical Society will unveil its new downtown History Center with a preview opening featuring special hours during June’s first-Friday Gallery Walk and Strolling of the Heifers weekend.
The new center on the first floor of the Masonic building at 196 Main St. (with a separate south-side entrance and rear-door wheelchair ramp) will feature the first of a series of changing exhibits — starting with a look at local agricultural history, farm life and the former Valley Fair — on Friday, June 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Brattleboro Selectboard is seeking candidates to fill a Selectboard vacancy created by the resignation of member Ken Schneck.

Dr. White, the veterinarian who does the spay/neuter clinics at Windham County Humane Society and in Bellows Falls (as well as all over the state!) has received a grant through VT-CAN to subsidize kitten surgeries.
For the Month of June, residents of Windham County can get kittens (6 months old or younger) spayed or neutered for only $20. Vaccinations can be done at the time of the surgery (Rabies and Distemper) for an additional $10.
Fear of Speaking Freely
Being afraid to speak, is a Civil Rights issue. Students, Teachers, Journalists and the Public should have the freedom to speak freely and to assemble, yet they do not.
Students and citizens need to know, to see and hear alternatives to mainstream media and decide for themselves what is fact and what is fiction. Important issues of fact are being intentionally omitted; key items of history are being rewritten and replaced with contrived innuendo. Few who are normally relied upon for investigation or debate, dare to stand up to these forces.

Don Francisco and doña Juana, elders of the Q’ero nation, will offer healing and Initiations of Connection in Brattleboro from June 11-16. Check the IBrattleboro calendar for specifics on group events.
This is a time when we are all experiencing great change and transition, and this is the ideal opportunity to shed what no longer serves and step into the Star that burns deep within you.
The Q’ero — don Francisco’s and doña Juana’s people, are saidto be the last direct descendants of the Inca. They historically were respected as the keepers of the knowledge, and held a place of honor at traditional gatherings and festivals. After the Spanish conquest, they remained invisible, living in small villages as high as 16,000 feet above sea level.
Gordon Haywood, local legend, author and flower garden expert will present a special program at the Putney Public Library on Thursday, June 6th at 7pm. He will present slides and a talk that feature his amazing landscaping creation at the Berg’s garden in Walpole, N.H.
The Berg’s garden will be part of the upcoming Garden Tour on June 15th and 16th to benefit the Putney Central and Putney Public Libraries.
