The Brattleboro Selectboard handed out annual liquor licenses then held an extended discussion about COSU, a collaborative community project to tear down silos and create connections between addiction and recovery programs in the community.
The Nimbus Dance Company will be back on The Putney School campus from Feb. 24 to March 2 for a week-long residency.
This will be the premier New Jersey contemporary dance company’s eighth consecutive year on campus. While here, the dancers will teach master classes and perform excerpts of new Nimbus dance pieces in addition to pieces from their acclaimed repertory.
I have taught in Brattleboro public schools for over 25 years. Our two children went to Brattleboro schools, BAMS and BUHS. Even though I retired from teaching in June of 2018 I continue to contribute to area schools and to speak out for quality public education. I am committed to promoting equal access to a quality education for children of all abilities. I have lived in this town for over 30 years and believe I have a sense of our community values… diversity, creativity, compassion, sustainability.
The VFW will be having a breakfast Saturday Feb. 23rd from 8 am – 10:30 am. This is not a buffet, but you may choose to purchase eggs made to order, sausage, bacon, potatoes, toast, homemade sausage gravy over biscuits, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, and pancakes or french toast with real maple syrup. This will be on the canteen side, not the hall side.
Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford, now in its 53rd concert season, presents “Stolen Jewels,” its Midwinter Musicale, on Saturday, February 23, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Guilford Community Church. Alison Hale, flute, and Christopher Lewis, piano, both busy teachers and guest artists, will perform four romantic duets transcribed for flute that were originally scored for other instruments with piano. The program of chamber favorites includes the Brahms Sonata in F minor for clarinet, the Schubert Arpeggione Sonata for Cello, the three Romances for Oboe by Schumann, and the Sonata in A Major for violin by Fauré.
Happy February! As a member of the Brattleboro Town School Board since 2011, I’ve seen first-hand the extraordinary work done by dedicated professionals. I’m running to continue to ensure that excellence, particularly as we move towards a merged entity under the state-mandated Act 46.
To comply with Act 46, I have led our board through reviewing all options, including the alternative governance plan. I could not support the alternative governance option because legal and financial experts had serious concerns of its legalities, particularly regarding sharing of staff.

Mar. 2 – Apr. 14: Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to present Gene Parulis: Visions and Explorations, with an artist’s opening reception Saturday, March 2, 5-7 pm. The exhibit continues through April 14, and an Artist Talk is scheduled for March 23, 5 pm.
Gene Parulis has been absorbed in photographing the world for fifty years, and his passion for photography is central to his teaching and traveling. He has taught in diverse places from a mountain village in Algeria to Kuwait University, California to Vermont and has exhibited in galleries in the USA and Europe.

Give us a brief biography – who are you? What do you do?
My husband, Tom and I moved to Brattleboro in 2007, after 20 years of visiting relatives here in town, and we opened two small businesses. The younger of our two daughters, Mary, attended BUHS. I opened a consulting business 10 years ago. With 30 years of experience, as an environmental planner, I prepare environmental permits, and write environmental impact statements.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — A 20-year-old Slovenian bested 30 of the world’s top up-and-coming ski jumpers Sunday to win the Harris Hill Ski Jump’s annual namesake Fred Harris Memorial Tournament.
Blaz Pavlic, performing for a crowd of several thousand spectators, came within two meters of matching the hill long-distance record of 104 meters he set with his first win in 2017.
“For the hill record, you need a little bit of headwind,” said Pavlic, who jumped this year in calmer conditions.
The USDA announced a rule change that would cut food assistance for individuals who are having trouble finding work and restricting State agencies’ requests to waive those USDA restrictions.

Waterbury Vermont, February, 2019 – Michael Alexander, a guest of the Green Mountain Central Labor Council AFL-CIO, recently spoke to Equal Time Radio (WDEV 550AM) about his experience serving as a volunteer soldier in the YPG. The YPG & YPJ are the military arm of the revolution in the northern Syria. The revolution, which is ideologically influenced by the writings of the Vermont philosopher Murray Bookchin, is seeking to establish a secular Town Meeting-like direct democracy in Rojava (Syria). Alexander, a native of Ohio USA, served as a heavy machine gunner on the Raqqa front.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — A young Slovenian bested 32 of the world’s best up-and-coming ski jumpers Saturday on the first day of this weekend’s Harris Hill Ski Jump.
Blaz Pavlic, 20, won the most total points in front of a crowd of several thousand spectators, with Xaver Aigner, 16, of Austria second and Zak Silih, 23, of Slovenia third.
In the men’s U.S. Cup, Canden Wilkinson, 16, of Colorado’s Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club finished first and Hunter Gibson, 17, of Illinois’ Norge Ski Club placed second, even though both experienced falls in the last of their two jumps.

It’s the last regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectrboard before elections in March, and the agenda is a light one.
The board will talk liquor and drugs, finances, an exemption to the plastic bag ordinance, and will review their goals and progress. They also pay attention when you bring up that other item not on the agenda, during public participation.
The Brattleboro Arts Committee will meet on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 1:00pm in the Hanna Cosman Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Traffic Safety Committee will meet on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 8:00am in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Finance Committee will meet on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 5:30pm in the Cusick Conference Room (2ndfloor) of the Windham Regional Career Center, located at 80 Atwood Street.
The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect.
Snow and ice will be removed from the streets in the downtown area this evening.
Parked vehicles in the downtown district must be removed by 11:00pm or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Early/absentee ballots for the Brattleboro Annual Town and Town School District Meeting to be held March 5, are now available in the Brattleboro, Town Clerk’s office. Anyone wishing to vote prior to March 5 may apply for an early/absentee ballot until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 4.
Early/absentee ballots may be voted in person in the Clerk’s office, mailed to the voter by the Clerk’s office, picked up by the voter, or if a voter is in need can be delivered to the voter’s residence by two Justices of the Peace. All voted ballots must be received by the Clerk before the polls close on election day in order to be counted. For more information or to request an early/absentee ballot call 251-8157.
