BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – The idea that women should always work for less or, even better, for free is the economic theory behind Screwnomics, the subject and title of a new book by Rickey Garde Diamond that she will discuss at Everyone’s Books Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
The event is co-sponsored by the book store and the Brattleboro branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
From DaVinci’s screaming soldiers to Hals Laughing Cavaliers, the history of art is full of powerful examples of the portrait portrayed expressively. This workshop will focus on rendering the complexities of the human portrait in an active manner by studying the aspects of facial anatomy which convey expression. Each day a different emotion will be studied and rendered in a variety of drawing styles.
Ed Smyth will weave a bent-mind fabric of brain-twisted topics and micro-sketches as the featured performer of the “3rd Thursdays @ 33” series opener on October 18 at 7:00 PM at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls. He’s an intellect-friendly, upbeat, one-man vaudeville act for grown-ups with a silly streak.
Based in Troy, NY, Ed performs his “Geek Comedy Hour” regularly in coffeehouses, performance spaces, and venues throughout the northeast with bits like Wally the Happy Talking Neutrino, a Neanderthal with a primitive folk-song magic-bit Tom Jones act, a fresh dairy products sea chanty, “Vladimir Lenin Live In Vegas”, kazoo heavy metal, a Bronx gangster movie version of Snow White, warped history, the funk-o-licious pickle song, Micro Fun, and more. No politics, no mean jokes.

There are many ways of finding out the “Gematria” of a word,name or phrase. These different ways are called “ciphers”. They are all inter related. I will use the four base ciphers and the “S” exception. The English Ordinal is the alphabetic order. A=1 B=2 C=3..Z=26. Simply add the numbers together to find the Gematria of a word. The word “Fox” for example. F is the 6th letter, O is the 15th and X is the 24th. Added up it equals 45.
A staged reading of True as Steel, a play in the words of early Brattleboro literary couple Royall & Mary Tyler, will be performed one time only on Thursday, October 11, at 7:30 pm at 118 Elliot, 118 Elliot Street in Brattleboro as the first act of this year’s Brattleboro Literary Festival. The play and an exhibition at Brooks Memorial Library are this year’s Lit Fest offerings highlighting the area’s rich literary history as a partner in the Brattleboro Words Project. Last year’s Lit Fest/‘Words’ event was a pop-up exhibit on Main Street on the life of Lucy Terry Prince, considered the nation’s first African American poet.
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of traditional Celtic and folk music from Quebec, Nova Scotia and New England by Quebec-based trio Genticorum and fiddler/singer Zoe Darrow at Next Stage on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm.
Over the past 18 years, Quebec-based Genticorum has become a fixture on the international world, trad, folk and Celtic music circuit, releasing six albums and performing over 800 concerts in Canada, the US and Europe.

Write Action is a non-profit org which promotes writing and writers in this part of the world. During the literary festival we host both the Spotlight Reading, and the Open Reading. This year, both readings will be in the CCV atrium in the Brooks House on Saturday.

The Brattleboro Words Project’s Thursday, October 18, 2018 Roundtable Discussion will gather representatives who work with these treasures in recognition of National Archives Month in October. The discussion will take place at 6:00 pm at 118 Elliot, 118 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, Vermont 05301. The Roundtable event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

West Brattleboro — Each fall for the past several seasons, the gallery spaces at All Souls Church (ASC), aka West Village Meeting House, have been filled with blessings of Peace in the form of Stuart Copans’ papercuts. The current show is titled “Peace is a Process.”
This 9th annual exhibit features Copans’ creatively diverse cuttings of “Shalom,” the Hebrew word for Peace, and “Salaam,” its Arabic equivalent. In addition to these papercuts, viewers will be treated to Copans’ recent “concrete poems,” in which the poetry is intimately entangled with the object on which it is written, as well as the first few of his tea bag prints and limericks inspired by Edward Lear’s nonsense verse and drawings. Also showing are Dotty Seiter’s “Prayers in the Wind,” a collection of peace-prayer mobiles spinning gently in the central foyer windows.
Sixteen youth rock bands and solo music artists from around New England will take the stage at 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro, Vermont on Saturday, September 29 for BrattRock 2018, the third annual Brattleboro Youth Rock Festival. Performances will take place on two stages, one indoor and one outdoor, between 5:00 and 10:00 PM. Gates open to the public at 4:30 PM. In addition to six continuous hours of live music, the festival will feature food vendors, arts and crafts activities, and games. All are invited to attend this fun-for-all-ages community event.

When Martha dragged home an ancient teletype machine on the subway, it was more than Tom could take. Tom was Martha’s plumber, but he was also her friend. In fact it had only been on rare occasions that Tom had crawled under Martha’s sink.
Tom worried about Martha, and Martha worried about him. He could see solutions to her obvious problem — clutter. The solutions seemed simple to execute but it would be a hard sell to get Martha’s consent.
