Stage 33 Live, A Casual Intro

Stage 33 Live is bringing River HALO and The Break Maids together for a concert this Sunday evening, April 15, at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls. Doors at 6. All ages. Admission by donation. Recording for broadcast. Seating is limited to 50, plus standing room.

If you haven’t heard of Stage 33 Live, that’s no surprise. We’re new. And sporadic. And unusual. And evolving. We’re like the local love child of Ted Talks, eTown, Science Friday, BackStory, and The Little Rascals (“hey kids, let’s put on a show”). It’s a celebration of local and regional original humanities and science presentations and performances, spoken word arts, and music presented as a broadcast and web variety program, recorded during live listening events on a simple stage in a former industrial building in Bellows Falls, Vermont; a nonprofit endeavor run entirely by volunteers. ACLU Calls On Local Governments To Pursue Public Broadband

As Brattleboro begins down the path toward adding municipal broadband utility, the ACLU has weighed in with a new report “The Public Internet Option – How Local Governments Can Provide Network Neutrality, Privacy, and Access for All.”

The report compares the necessity of internet access to that of electricity and water, and says that the rollback of net neutrality laws and enforcement threatens equal access (as we have for say, roads and bridges).

Comic Robyn Schall to Perform at the River Garden

BRATTLEBORO, VT – Strolling of the Heifers presents “An Evening of Comedy with Robyn Schall” on Saturday, April 14 at 8:00 p.m. Robyn’s blend of stand-up, sketch and improv will make this an event not to miss. BYOB and laugh ‘til the cows come home! This special night of comedy is a fundraiser for Strolling of the Heifers’ Farm-To-Table Apprenticeship Program. Wayward Home Folk Musical Comes To Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The story of how a flood affects a family is told through the eyes of three storytellers in the musical “Wayward Home,” which will be performed at Main Street Arts Friday and Saturday, Apr. 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.

With themes that are described as “mythic, with a lot of magic and hyper-theatricality,” the two-act piece has some 20 original musical numbers, with the performers accompanying themselves on piano, guitar and banjo and moving from musician to storyteller as they tell their characters’ stories in a folksy style.

Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway Deeper Than The Skin – Building Bridges with Music

WEST BRATTLEBORO — Singer-songwriters Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway will appear in concert at All Souls’ Church on Saturday, April 14th, at 7 p.m. with their joint production, “Deeper Than The Skin – Building Bridges with Music” addressing the racial divide.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Harris and Greenway put their experiences together in “Deeper Than The Skin,” a concert presentation that explores their unique history as a white man from the capital of the Confederacy and a black man whose maternal ancestor was a slave on a plantation just outside of Richmond. They have built a bridge between their lives through 30 years of friendship, shared goals, and a passion to build community.

Hello, my name is Jason Alden and I invite you to visit The Drawing Studio, a creative workspace for artists, students and families.  As a life-long lover of drawing, I offer this space as an encouragement to individuals to explore their creative natures, independently or in community. All are welcome.

The Drawing Studio is fully equipped with drawing and water-based art materials, paper, easels, still life collections and a wonderful art library.  We have a coffee and tea bar and windows overlooking the Whetstone Brook.

You may work independently or with instruction.  I have many years experience with drawing, painting and color theory and am happy to help you as much as you need.

The Real Meaning of “26”

In Kabbalah, the central belief is God created the world with language, by combining the number with the letter with the word. This is expressed in the foundational text of Kabbalah, the Sepher Yetzirah, or in English, The Book of Formation. Osher Lectures on Rumi and the Qur’an

BRATTLEBORO—The Brattleboro Chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) announces the first in its Spring series of lectures, to be held on Monday, April 2. The lectures’ subject is “Reading the Qur’an with Rumi.”

Jalaluddin Rumi, the thirteenth-century Muslim contemplative who is today one of the best-selling poets in America, considers the Qur’an a map of the self and the Qur’anic stories to contain wisdom that can lead to a life of happiness and flourishing. In this Monday’s lecture, Amer Latif, a professor of religious studies at Marlboro College, will give an overview of the Qur’an, and of Rumi and his thought.

Two Vocal Quartets in Benefit Concert for Women’s Chorus

On Friday, April 6 at 7:30 pm in the Centre Congregational Church parlor, a benefit concert for the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus will be performed by two local-area vocal quartets, the Seymour Sisters and Singcrony.

The Seymour Sisters are Betsy Williams, Laura Williams, Beth Spicer, and Kate Wolff, who sing old-time, gospel, country and swing, as well as play a combination of banjo, mandolin, guitar, dobro and stand-up bass.

So begins the song, which begins the story, which begins the adventure: One day, something drives Isidor from out of his little grey existence. His cheek runs away, and Isidor must search around the world to find it again: a world of color and beauty, as well as loneliness and even danger.

Isidor’s Cheek is performed on a revolving table filled with all the details of Isidor’s miniature world: from his shabby grey house to a forest of apple trees, through an unfriendly city, across a sea of turtles and barracuda, into the smallest circus in the world. The table revolves to bring Isidor home again and to transform his house, his garden and indeed his whole outlook on life. Isidor himself is barely 5 and 1/2 inches high (14 cm), an appropriately little hero for a small story with a big heart.
