Spiritually-Centered Parenting Group

A new group for parents of babies and young children will begin to meet Tuesdays, from 11am-12pm, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 16 Bradley Avenue, Brattleboro.

The group begins meeting on Tuesday, June 4th. The purpose of the group is to connect parents to a greater purpose through reading, discussion and play. This group is open to all faith traditions and philosophical backgrounds. It is a chance for parents of young children to support one another AND a chance for children to play together.

Dominion Over Everything That Creepeth Upon The Earth, or, Not

With the future of “life as we know it” increasingly entering a gray-zone of uncertainty this might be a good time to stand above the controversies of can we, or can we not, save ourselves.

Confined to our small planet, we humans evolved an anthropocentric view of life, believing that “human beings are the central or most significant species on the planet, or the assessment of reality through an exclusively human perspective.” ~Merriam-Webster

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” ~Genesis

And so, creepeth we did.

My Dog is Cool Action Day Event and Photos

Harmony lot was the site of one of thirty My Dog is Cool Action Day events held around the country this month.  Despite the cold, wind, and driving rain which eventually forced us to leave earlier than we wanted to (and Kevin Maloney’s rather scary mask and tail) lots of laughs were had and stories of dogs in hot cars shared with us from visitors from South Carolina, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Texas, as well as around Vermont. 

Marijuana Diabetes and Obesity Health Benefits

New cannabis research indicate that cannabis compounds may help in controlling blood sugar, yet health trends occur despite the fact that marijuana users take in more calories.

The most important finding is that current users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers. Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level. Current marijuana users showed fasting insulin levels that were 16% lower than those of former or never users, along with a 17% reduction in another measure of insulin resistance as well.

Denny Rivers Named BMH 2013 Employee of the Year

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital named Denny Rivers, MLT, its 2013 Employee of the Year during an employee appreciation event held May 16.

A member of the Laboratory Services secretarial staff since 1995, Rivers was nominated for the award in recognition of her problem-solving abilities, among other qualities. She holds a Medical Laboratory Technician certification from University of Vermont, which her peers say makes her a fast worker and thinker while guiding patients.

The Chester/Saxtons Crush vaulted into first place in the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League by sweeping a doubleheader against Brattleboro, while the Keene Black Dawgs handed Claremont its first loss of the year. In other town team action, Sunapee’s Old Lakers edged Putney and the Walpole Wild Blue defeated the Newport Polar Bears.

A Community Celebration at West River Park

On Saturday May 18th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM the Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Board and the West River Park Committee will be hosting the Grand Opening Celebration for West River Park on Route 30 West, 1.3 miles past the entrance to The Brattleboro Retreat.

Please join the community for food and fun during this exciting opening day. Raffle tickets for a chance to win eight tickets to the Red Sox are currently being sold with the drawing at the park on the 18th. Any donations to the park will be gratefully accepted!

Green Mountain Camp – Remembering & Reconnecting Reunion

On Saturday May 18th from 5 to 9 PM, Green Mountain Camp will be celebrating 96 years of memories at their reunion for friends and alumnae! Whether you are 9 or 90, there will be pictures, songs and stories to remind you of your magical time at Green Mountain Camp.

Come see what has changed at the camp and what has stayed the same. It’s a time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones as you enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner, s’mores, and singing around the campfire. During the evening there will be guest appearances by past GMC directors. Tickets are $10 for the evening to benefit the scholarship fund.

Volunteers Create New Gardens at Brattleboro Exit 1

In an effort organized by the Exit 1 Gateway Project and Green Up Vermont, a visiting Americorps team and local volunteers expanded the Exit 1 gardens on May 4, Green Up Day, and May 9, 2013. They Greened Up the Exit 1 end of Canal Street.

They turned over fresh ground to prepare more garden space. They planted a bank of daylilies, as well as brightly colored pansies and other annuals that are blooming now.

The defending Connecticut River Valley Baseball League champion Claremont Cardinals are now in sole possession of first place, the Chester/Saxtons River Crush emerged victorious in a rain shortened battle against Putney, Sunapee defeated Walpole and Keene won its first game of the year in recent action among local adult baseball teams.

Neighbors: Help Save Kid’s Summer Program!

PLEASE ATTEND MEETING: Clark Canal Community Association, Thursday, May 16th  —  6:30 P.M., Agape Church

Each Summer for years, Peggy Longueil directed the program and we all thought she would continue forever. When Peggy died, it was our good fortune that Juanita Lane volunteered to keep the Summer program alive. 

Through the Summer Program, neighbor kids have a place to be active and enjoy planned activities, including movies, swimming, and even did a marvelous job painting a mural at the Brattleboro Transportation Center! 

Proctor and Gamble Pet Food Recall

Recently we were informed that One Stop Country Pet would no longer be carrying EVO  brand organic, raw dry dog food, the only kind our three boys have ever eaten. We finished the supply we had (which fell within the production time before Salmonella was identified in several Natura products). 

We just spoke with another pet supply store in Boston and they, too, stopped carrying Natura products as a result of the problems Natura has had after being bought out by Proctor and Gamble, according to both stores.
