Strolling of the Heifers announces its 2013 keynote culinary event: The Great New England Quiche Cookoff.
Quiche is defined as a baked, open-faced savory tart, comprised of a crust filled with a mixture of eggs, cream, cheese and a variety of other ingredients.
This year’s event will showcase quiche as an easy meal. For presentation to the judges and exhibition to the public, entries will be paired with a slice of buttered bread and a salad of dressed, local greens, all donated by sponsors.

I never did find out because I went only so far before reading some instructions on how to remove that message which required downloading a program .. Said to be from Microsoft.. Called “fix it”.

BURLINGTON, Vt., March 27 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said today he will introduce legislation to break up banks that have grown so big that the Justice Department has not pursued prosecutions for fear an indictment would harm the financial system.
The 10 largest banks in the United States are bigger now than before a taxpayer bailout following the 2008 financial crisis. At the time Congress, over Sanders’ objection, approved a $700 billion bank rescue because of concerns by some that the financial institutions were too big to fail. Another $16 trillion from the Federal Reserve propped up financial institutions.

Andrea Livermore has just announced that she will be resigning from Building a Better Brattleboro effective April 12, 2013. She says she may serve in a part time capacity through the fiscal year to provide for a smooth transition.
She says:
There was much talk at the recent Representative Town Meeting about “sending a message” to the School board and Selectboard.
One clear message was that people are reaching a breaking point with tax increases. We heard repeated stories of fixed incomes, dropping salaries, and rising costs making it increasingly hard to get by in our hometown.
Another clear message is that budgets were approved as presented. Attempts to cut budgets failed, and Representatives approved all expenditures.
Which message was sent, and which was heard?
BURLINGTON, Vt., March 26 – Citing a legal opinion by the Government Accountability Office, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today called on Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to withdraw his plan to stop Saturday mail delivery.
Sanders said the opinion by the non-partisan GAO unambiguously declared that the Postal Service has no legal authority to end Saturday mail without the approval of Congress. In fact, Congress just last week passed a bill that restated the requirement for the Postal Service to maintain Saturday mail delivery.

Bread and Puppet Theater and the SAGE Alliance will join forces to mark one year of illegal operation by Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee on Saturday, 3/30/13 at 3:30pm, with a parade through the streets of Brattleboro and a rally at the Latchis Theater.
The state of Vermont’s original operating license for Yankee expired on March 21, 2012. In blatant defiance of Vermont state law and the will of the people, Entergy continues to operate Vermont Yankee; generating additional radioactive waste, polluting the Connecticut River with thermal waste, and barraging the state of Vermont with lawsuits. It has been one year of waste.

Presenter: Tad Montgomery – ecological engineer, principal of and member of the Home Energy Challenge and PACE sub-committees of the Brattleboro Town Energy Committee.
Tad began by asking the audience of about 25 people whether they had done energy efficiency retrofits on their houses since 2007. About ? had. He noted that statewide it is 5.6%, or about 1% per year. At that rate it will take 100 years to get to the 20%-30% goal the state has set for itself by 2020.
BURLINGTON, Vt., March 25 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said today that a Senate vote showed overwhelming opposition to President Barack Obama’s proposal to cut benefits for Social Security recipients and disabled veterans.
The Senate early Saturday passed a budget resolution that included Sanders’ amendment against switching to a so-called chained consumer price index which would cut cost-of-living adjustments by changing how inflation is measured.
“This is a strong signal that when push comes to shove the Senate is going to oppose any effort to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, disabled veterans and their survivors,” Sanders said after the vote.

I see the internet as a tool for colective problem solving. As a community the internet gives opportunity for the many great ideas to be seeded into the minds of all who wish to subscribe to finding solutions to many of the daily challenges we all face.
A term “Crowd Sourcing” seems appropriate to describe how I see this tool can become effective in finding solutions, such as the current financial crises our area is facing.
The Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Respiratory Care Department announced it has established regular hours for electroencephalogram (EEG) testing and made an upgrade to its Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) system.
BMH Respiratory Services Manager Laurie Kuralt, RN, BSN, CCRN, says a staff member recently received extensive training in performing EEG tests, enabling the hospital to offer regularly scheduled hours for EEG testing three days a week on an outpatient basis, as well as on weekends should the need arise. An EEG test measures electrical activity in the brain. It is used to diagnose epilepsy, study sleep disorders like narcolepsy, and check for mental health problems or problems with dementia, among other applications.
