Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – June 4, 2013

An architect and engineer for the Police Fire Facility Project might be selected at the next regular Tuesday meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.

The board will return to the issue of serving drinks outdoors at Arkham, begin the process of filling an upcoming Selectboard vacancy, issue warrants for unlicensed dogs, and begin making Town Committee appointments. And you can bring up anything else not on the agenda during Public Participation.

Sanders Statement on Social Security Trust Fund Report

BURLIGTON, Vt., May 31 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a Senate Budget Committee member and founder of the Defending Social Security Caucus, issued the following statement after Social Security trustees today released their annual report on the retirement system’s finances:

“The report from the Social Security trustees confirms what many of us have known, that Social Security is not ‘going broke,’ that it can pay every benefit owed to every eligible American for the next 20 years and that after 2033 there is enough in reserve to pay three-quarters of future benefits.

Noan Chomsky on the 21st Century

Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, political critic and activist. He is an institute professor and professor emeritus in the department of linguistics and philosophy at MIT, where he has worked for over 50 years. History educator Daniel Falcone spoke with Chomsky in his Cambridge office on May 14.

He has some interesting, iconoclastic ideas on a lot of things. Here are a few excerpts from this interview.

On Wednesday, June 28, a caller identified himself as calling from “Vermont Opinion Services,” asking me to answer some questions. It soon became apparent that this was what is known as a push poll – a poll paid for by one side of an issue. The questions in this poll all related to Vermont Yankee, energy in general, and nuclear power. 

Some of the questions were as follows: (not exact quotes, but taken from my notes of the call)

-Do you support keeping Vermont Yankee operating knowing it helps make Vermont energy independent?

Weekend Concert Series – Dire Straits

Let’s pop over to Australia for the final night of Dire Strait’s Brothers In Arms tour from April 1986.

As with many groups, the best known Dire Straits songs are not necessarily their best tracks. This show features a mixture of hits (at the time) and some lesser-known songs.

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits always seemed to fly just a bit under the radar, and like Kid Creole, probably didn’t get the full recognition they deserved. It was the 80’s and they didn’t have many dance moves to show off on MTV, though they did have some success with videos.

As more countries make progress towards implementing complete bans, the tobacco industry is increasingly using tactics such as brand extension, product placement and stealth marketing to sell its products. The ultimate goal of World No Tobacco Day is to contribute to protect present and future generations not only from these devastating health consequences, but also against the social, environmental and economic scourges of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.

Your Scariest Horror Movie Rec?

Okay, folks. I love horror movies and am hoping to see some recommendations that I don’t know of already. Personally, the gore and torture films aren’t what I consider scary horror. I’m talking about things that fill you with dread, are tense and leave indelible impressions. For instance… after seeing the Blair Witch Project I couldn’t get the sight of the guy standing in the basement corner out of my mind. Creepy is much more insidious than slash.

So please, if you’ve a mind to, tell what movies left that mark on you.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Presents Planet Zydeco

Twilight Music begins its 11th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, June 2 with Planet Zydeco.  The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. All concerts begin at 5:30 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Putney Food Co-Op, Putney Paper Company, The Putney Inn, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations.  The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

The Library will close on Saturday, June 1, for final data migration to our new ILS (integrated library system) using an open source software called Koha. We will be joining with four other public libraries in Vermont for phase 1 of the Catamount Library Network, the beginning of a state-wide resource sharing network. Brattleboro Selectboard Vacancy – Appointment Process

Shortly after the Brattleboro Selectboard’s May 21, 2013 meeting, Ken Schneck formally notified the Town Clerk of his resignation from the Selectboard effective June 19, 2013.

The process for selecting a new Selectboard member is governed by Brattleboro’s Town Charter and the Selectboard’s Rules For Conduct Of Meetings And Hearings. Applicable language is quoted below.

Article IV, Section 4 of the Charter provides:
“When a member of the selectboard resigns . . . the office shall become vacant.”

The Charter continues that:
“When a vacancy occurs on the board, the remaining selectboard shall fill the vacancy by appointment until the next regularly scheduled election.”
