West Brattleboro Association To Meet With District 1 Town Meeting Members

The West Brattleboro Association is inviting all the District 1 Town Meeting members to meet with the West B community on Thursday, March 6 for a Q&A/discussion session.  This will be at 7 pm in the Hayes Court Community Room on Garfield Drive, just west of the Post Office and Richards Building.

The focus will be on the warrant for the upcoming Town Meeting on March 22, but the questions and conversation will go wherever the attendees take them. The actual warrant can be found on the town’s website – – by following the Election Info link.

Vermont’s law pertaining to Patient Choice at the End of Life took effect on May 20, 2013 and legalizes physician-aid in dying for eligible adults living with a terminal illness. Featuring Cindy Bruzzese, the Executive Director of the Vermont Ethics Network, this forum is not a debate for or against Act 39; it is a public informational presentation only and allows time for questions and answers.

Betsy Gentile, Workforce Development Manager and Adult Education Coordinator has developed 18 community education and training programs to meet the needs of area employers and their employees as well as providing personal and professional enrichment opportunities for all community members.

Strolling of the Heifers Spring Gardening and CSA Preview

Spring is just around the corner and the Strolling of the Heifers is gearing up to make more connections between farmers and the community with their first annual Spring Gardening and CSA Preview. 

CSA’s are community-supported agricultural ventures. CSA members or subscribers pay at the onset of the growing season for a share of the anticipated harvest; once harvesting begins, they receive weekly shares of vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese, eggs or other products depending on the farm.

Snack Theatre Revival Features Cabin Fever, “Comedy of Menace,” in Stroll Benefit

Brattleborians of a certain age have long waited for the return of the Snack Theatre, an irreverent troupe that illuminated the aughts with a series of theatrical evenings augmented with libations and delectable sweets, before entering a period of hibernation.

The wait is over. In a production that will benefit the new home of Strolling of the Heifers, Snack veterans Beth Kiendl, William Stearns and Bill Hickok will reprise “Cabin Fever” — a “comedy of menace” penned by Joan Schenkar.

The entirety of the play takes place on a rural New England front porch, represented by a set designed by Clay Coyle, whose design credits range from off-Broadway to regional theatres in the East Coast and New England.

While March may be the final month for the 8th season of the Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market, don’t let that fool you into thinking not much is happening each week at the market. The increasing daylight hours means that our farmers’ high tunnel greenhouses are producing early fresh greens. And as the snows melt and ground thaws, wintered-over carrots and the sweetest parsnips with the sweetest taste you can imagine may appear, and maybe even some leeks!

Nationally acclaimed acoustic Blues singer, historian and songwriter, Scott Ainslie, will perform a benefit concert for the Friends of the Brooks Memorial Library. The concert will be held on Friday, March 21 at 7:30 in the Brooks Library on Main Street in Brattleboro.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – March 4, 2014

Tuesday will be a busy day. You’ll need to take time to go vote for mostly unopposed candidates, and take time to go observe the new Police and Fire Plans and attend the Brattleboro Selectboard meeting to express your Police and Fire Facility comments in an official, public capacity before they approve them as presented.

The board will give out the first liquor license to a new Brooks House business, a restaurant with owners from Colorado, and approve annual licenses for a list of other local establishments. Utility rates will be get a first reading, new electric vehicle charging stations for the Transportation Center will be discussed, the Town Manger search 2.0 will kick off, the Selectboard will discuss goals for the coming year, and more.

Joseph Sullivan, the CEO of Hinsdale Greyhound Park, agreed to be interviewed by a Keene High School student in his corporate office on October 26, 2004. The American Studies assignment required the students to interview various owners of dissimilar businesses located throughout Cheshire County. Their objective was to gain an understanding of the impact these various businesses have on their respective communities from an economic, social, and historical perspective. Upon completion of the class project, the student interviews would be published in the Keene Sentinel which did not happen.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of March 2, 2014

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015.

Weather permitting, night work will be conducted Sunday night, March 2nd through Friday night, March 7th.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Fall of 2015.

Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Scott Ainslie has combed the Library of Congress photo archives and combined archival photos with his own images of the Mississippi Delta for a concert tour that explores this formative region of the American South. Visually and musically entertaining, the concert is a richly varied exploration of the region that was ground zero for the development of the Blues.

Judy Garland had a CBS Sunday night TV show in the early 1960’s – The Judy Garland Show.

It comes at a somewhat depressing point in her life. After years of being fed uppers and downers by movie studios, getting divorced, and getting into some serious debt and contractual problems, she was in a difficult spot. TV success, those around her reasoned, might be the only thing to pull her life back into order.

She was 40 years old when this was filmed. It got four Emmy nominations.

I decided to run as a write in candidate for the one year Brattleboro Select Board seat on March 4th.    I figure that this should not be a walk-in.  I am one of the District 3 reps and plan to continue as such.  I do not support the present plans for the Police and Fire as they stand and know there are other alternatives and how this will effect the property taxes in the future.  How many cuts can you make without shredding all of the necessary needs of this community?
