Twilight music presents Northampton, Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter Heather Maloney with her band (Ken Maiuri on bass and J.J. O’Connell on drums), plus multi-instrumentalist and singer Sam Moss at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 pm.

Rooted in what she calls “adventurous folk,” Heather Maloney’s smart, catchy and soulful music features literate songwriting that explores themes of spirituality, transformation, and impermanence. Maloney’s brand new self-titled CD is the third album for the songwriter hailed by The Huffington Post for “lyrics that cut to the chase.” DigBoston wrote that she “deserves the type of cult following that has allowed the likes of Aimee Mann and Ani DiFranco that long standing success and influence they have had.” As a classically trained vocalist who once aimed for the opera, there is a strength and certainty in Maloney’s voice that provides a solid foundation for the vocal playfulness throughout her work.

Compass School Welcomes Prospective Students for Open House

The Open House is hosted by current students, staff, and parents and includes a tour of the school, homemade dinner, and a presentation from Asst Director Eric Rhomberg. Exit 1 Spring Planting and Greenup – Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m.

Last fall we planted 1,000 daffodils at Exit 1. They are starting to bloom! We invite you come out to Exit 1 on Greenup Day to help plant more flowers, help greenup the Exit 1 end of Canal Street (if you wish), and admire the daffodils.

Come at 10:00 a.m. to Exit 1, where we will have Greenup bags and coffee and doughnuts on offer. Wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Bring a trowel for planting if you have one. Park at the Outlet Center. Plan to buy more food and drinks, if you need them, at the nearby Irving gas station, Burger King, or Price Chopper.

BURLINGTON, Vt., April 21 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a member of the Senate environment and energy committees and the sponsor of legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, issued the following statement on Monday’s observation of Earth Day:

“Unless we take bold action to reverse climate change, our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to look back on this period in history and ask a very simple question: ‘Where were they? Why didn’t the United States of America lead the international community in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the devastating damage that the scientific community was sure would come?’

Brattleboro Spring Water Main Flushing Schedule

WATER  MAIN  FLUSHING  TO  START

Utilities Division crews will start Spring Flushing of the Town water mains on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 10:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, May 11, 2013. 

NOTE!!  Some daytime flushing will continue throughout the week of May 13, 2013.

Please note that water main flushing will occur at night and also during the day.

Customers are asked to check the flushing schedule closely as flushing causes water discoloration, low water pressure, and in some areas intervals of no water.

Brooks Memorial Library – Front Entrance Not Accessible April 22-25 – Doors Being Replaced

Starting Monday, April 22 through Thursday, April 25,  the Library’s Front Entrance on Main St.  will be not be accessible due to installation of new doors. The book drop (NOT VIDEO DROP)  on Main Street will be accessible all day throughout the construction.  
 
The Library’s Back Entrance next to the Municipal Center parking lot will be open and will accommodate wheelchairs. Handicap parking is in the Municipal Center lot.

New Hours for Computer Coaching Sessions at Brooks Memorial Library

Through the auspices of e-Vermont and a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation, the Brooks Memorial Library is able to continue its free one-on-one computer coaching sessions into May and beyond.

In these private 45-minute sessions, participants meet with a skilled student intern from Community College of Vermont to learn basic computer tasks, such as setting up and using an email account, creating a Facebook account, or using a word processor or other popular software program. Experienced computer users are also welcome to bring their questions. The library has computers available, or participants may bring their own tablets, smart phones, or laptops to explore the capabilities of those devices; for example, downloading ebooks or other digital media.

Sanders Votes for Background Checks, Assault Weapons Ban

WASHINGTON, April 17 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today voted for expanded background checks on gun buyers and for a ban on assault weapons but the Senate rejected those central planks of legislation inspired by the shootings of 20 first-grade students and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.

“Nobody believes that gun control by itself is going to end the horrors we have seen in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., Blacksburg, Va., Tucson, Ariz. and other American communities,” Sanders said. “There is a growing consensus, however, in Vermont and across America that we have got to do as much as we can to end the cold-blooded, mass murders of innocent people. I believe very strongly that we also have got to address the mental health crisis in our country and make certain that help is available for people who may be a danger to themselves and others,” Sanders added.

NEYT graduating seniors Henry Weisel and Alec Silver will be featured as the two servants, Scapin and Sylvester, who get themselves into the wildest and most ridiculous scrapes.

Department of Public Works Seeks Public Input on Brattleboro Sidewalk Project

The Town is planning to install new sidewalks on the east side of main Street, starting at the Gilbert Memorial Bridge and continuing north to Walnut Street. Some sections of this sidewalk were recently replaced as part of a VTrans project.

The Downtown Sidewalk Project will replace the sections that have not yet been upgraded. The project is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and create a more attractive Main Street.

Room for One More Team at Summer Soccer at SIT

There is still room for a team to join summer soccer in Brattleboro this year, sponsored by the Putney Soccer Club and held on Wednesday evenings at SIT. Eleven teams are not in place and there is room for one more. The season starts on May 1 and runs to the end of August.
