Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – December 15, 2020

There is a monster on the agenda for the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. It’s a channel monster grinder in need of some love and attention.

The board will also discuss non-monster items, such as the 2nd reading of the rental housing ordinance, a radio tower agreement, a new solar site designation, and more of the FY22 budget. You can bring up other items not already on the agenda, be they monster or non-monster, during public and monster participation.

Brattleboro Seeks Public Input on Update to Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Town of Brattleboro is in the process of updating the Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). The purpose of the HMP is to identify hazards facing the Town and to develop strategies to reduce the risks from those hazards. Hazards such as flooding, wildfires, landslides, blizzards, straight-line winds, ice storms, and droughts have the potential for inflicting economic loss and personal hardship.

As mandated by the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, all municipalities must have a local Hazard Mitigation Plan in order to qualify for Federal Emergency Management Administration funding should a natural disaster occur. The Brattleboro Hazard Mitigation Committee will provide feedback required for the Plan update, including the ranking of hazards and identification of strategic, cost-effective mitigation activities that may reduce future losses.

“I Keep My Promises”

Trump Said. ‘I Keep My Promises.’  In 2016, he made more than 280 campaign promises. Let’s see how he did:

1. “I will build a great, great wall on our southern border …” (speech, June 16, 2015)
Trump has built 307 miles of walls along the 1,984-mile border. (≈15%)

2. “… and I will have Mexico pay for that wall.”
Mexico is not paying for it.

Life With Biden

The four year American nightmare will be over soon. The mainstream media have already moved on and are giving Biden the attention of a sitting president. They really have no choice because Trump is still acting like a three year old in a sandbox who had his toy truck taken from him by a stronger kid.

The mainstream media will be able to move away from being the PR tool of a would-be dictator-pathological liar to reporting on the administration of a new president who has respect for others and who does not have an ego that is as needy as the plant Audrey in The Little Shop of Horrors movie that constantly says, “Feed me.”

A COVID Christmas Anti-Viral Holiday Special

covid christmas special

I promised you a new holiday treat for this year, and here it is: A COVID Christmas Anti-Viral Holiday Special.     It is a super cute animated Christmas story made especially for a special year, featuring a masked snowman, masked singers, socially-distanced Santa, toy shopping, Mom, and a decorated tree by a fire. And lots of mask jokes.

I didn’t set out to make a new holiday special. I was working on some Christmas card ideas and Lise saw what I was doing and suggested they might make for some nice animation. That got me thinking, and before long I was able to string together a series of card ideas into a parody of a couple of my favorite holiday films.

50th Annual Community Messiah Sing Is Indeed Cancelled, As Well As FOMAG’s Christmas at Christ Church

Friends of Music at Guilford regretfully makes official the already-obvious announcement of the cancellation of its annual Messiah Sing and Christmas at Christ Church concerts due to the COVID pandemic.

This year would have been the 50th Annual Community Messiah Sing at Centre Congregational Church with all door donations going to Groundworks to help the homeless and hungry. The whole church, even balconies, is packed with singers enthusiastically joining in the choruses, some bringing their own well-worn scores, others borrowing from FOMAG’s collection; all accompanied by Centre Church’s excellent organ, while an ensemble of soloists perform the arias and recitatives.
