This brief discussion about the benefits of Advance Directives will be led by a panel which will include the perspectives of Cindy Jerome, ED of Holton Home and Bradley House, Dr. Bob Tortolani, Attorney Ed Burke, and Shabir Kamal, ER Nurse. After the presentation, there will be a moderated question and answer session.

Representative Town Meeting 2018 Thoughts
The following is an excerpt from some replies I made on an FBIbook thread. I want to share them here in part to also mention an invitation to discuss Town Meeting more deeply. you will see the invitation at the end.
…Without making any claims about whether or not we came up with the right or wrong answers, overall I believe the decisions (at this year’s Representative Town Meeting) closely reflected the knowledge, experience and traditions of this town meeting and its attendees. The citizens in this exercise of democracy gave a very honest, sincere and respectful rendering of what they knew and what was in their hearts. There was a very powerful sense of community present. Not all of it evaporates at the end when we scatter. A few of the new people will have left feeling like they have drawn closer to their neighbors. They will feel a stronger sense of belonging and responsibility. There are good reasons that many people return for ten and twenty and thirty years. In this way Representative Town Meeting is invaluable.

Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Ballot Results
At Representative Town Meeting today, March 25, the body voted through Australian Ballot on Article 11:
“To see if the Town will authorize the following capital purchase for the Fire Department: The purchase of an aerial ladder truck at an estimated cost of $950,000, and will authorize the issuance of notes and/or bonds in the aggregate principal amount not to exceed $500,000 at a rate of interest not to exceed 5% per annum for a term of 10 years to pay a portion of the cost of said aerial ladder truck. The vote on this article shall be by Australian Ballot as required by law. The question to be voted upon is as follows:
VFW $6 Lunch Specials Open to the Public
The Brattleboro VFW located at 40 Black Mountain Road is open to the public for lunch. Lunch is served Mon-Fri from 11:30 – 1:30. Specials listed below are only $6 a plate. Representative Town Meeting 2018
It’s Representative Town Meeting Day in Brattleboro.
Representatives are filing in and getting settled, as are those of us who plan on covering today’s event. I have to say, I’m pretty tired from all the work on the new site, so I especially apologize in advance for spelling errors and such.
Usually, however, as they get into the more interesting debates of the day, this becomes less of a chore and more fun. I’m counting on it today.
I urge support for Article 13, Skatepark funding
I urge support for Article 13, Skatepark funding. The emotional arguments against a skatepark are reminiscent of arguments against dance halls in the 30’s, pool tables in the 40’s and bowling alleys in the 50’s. Kids are going to hang out somewhere. In my neighborhood, it was a 6′ plywood pool table in our basement; mom and dad upstairs; not exactly supervised, but ever-present. A skatepark is a relatively contained area more easily supervised than a dead-end dirt road in the woods.
Silencing Ourselves
I had an email tonight from the person that started the FBIbook site for Brattleboro’s representative town meeting. It was closed by this person because of fear that use of it violated state open meeting laws. Now go to every other town in Vermont, none of which have a representative town meeting. Every citizen in the town is entitled to attend the town meeting and vote. Is someone claiming that citizens of the town cannot discuss their upcoming town meeting over the internet? Can they discuss them at a coffee shop?
Woolen Mill
I noticed the history note about John Birge’s woolen mill burning down. There is an old woolen mill still standing on Birge Street. It is now apartments. I wonder if this is on the site of the one that burned? I’ve read that they made blankets there for the Union Army and later for Jordan Marsh.
Local “Celebrity” Dancers Featured at Youth Services Gala and Dance Show April 28
Here’s your chance to witness local “celebrities” showcasing their dance skills while supporting a great cause! On Saturday, April 28, Youth Services will be holding its Annual Gala & Silent Auction at SIT’s International Center from 5 to 10 p.m. New to the much anticipated event is a twist on televisions’ hit reality show, Dancing with the Stars. Youth Services’ Summer Camp Fair Held During April Gallery Walk
Brattleboro, VT- Youth Services will host their Annual Summer Camp Fair on Friday, April 6, on Gallery Walk Night from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the River Garden in downtown Brattleboro.
Many summer camp providers will supply activities and entertainment for the children. The public is encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity to arrange a fun-filled summer while being entertained. To entice the public to stop in, Youth Services is holding a free drawing for $100 credit toward a camp of the winner’s choice and giving out free balloons.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting
The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Monday, March 26, 2018, at 5:30pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center. The new Selectboard members will be sworn in and the Board will elect officers. An ASL interpreter will be available for deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.
Creating Your Own Small Business Website Is Subject Of BDCC Workshop
INSTIG8, an arm of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, will help small businesses and nonprofits create their own website in a workshop to be held on Thursday, April 29 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at the BDCC office at the Cotton Mill.

Marlboro College Doing Just Fine?!
This morning’s article in the Reformer about Marlboro College was odd in a number of ways. First, they say they have a “structural deficit” of 3-4 million dollars a year. But they say that the endowment is sufficient to cover this loss. The endowment is only about $40 million. The 990 for 2015 showed a loss of $4,000,000 in total assets, indicating that this $4 million a year loss has been going on for awhile.
Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting District 1 & 3 Caucuses
Brattleboro Districts 1 & 3 will caucus just prior to Representative Town Meeting on Saturday, March 24 at Brattleboro Area Middle School beginning at 8:00 AM in the Mulitpurpose Room. Representative Town Meeting begins at 8:30 AM. District 1 will be accepting nominations to fill and appoint six town meeting member seats for 1 year. District 3 will be accepting nominations to fill and appoint six town meeting member seats for 1 year.
