This weekend we have heavy metal thunder.

Lemmy Kilmister is the heart and soul of Motörhead . He’s the guy who has founded, steered and staffed Motörhead from the beginning in 1975 and is still at it. Among metalheads he’s a god. Even if you’re not a metal fan there’s something about Lemmy that’s irresistible. He’s a character, an old-fashioned hard-drinking, chain-smoking rocker with charm and wit. At a surprising 67 years old now (68 on Christmas Eve this year) he has unsurprising health issues and had to cancel the rest of this Summer’s gigs due to illness. But I have no doubt he’ll be back on the road soon. It’s his life.

Four Teams to Chase CRVBL Cup this Weekend

The Connecticut River Valley Baseball League will crown its 2013 champion this weekend as the four town teams that won first round playoff series will face off at the Walpole baseball complex. The semi-final 9-inning games start on Saturday at 1:00 as the regular season leader Chester/Saxtons Crush play the defending champion Claremont Cardinals, while the league’s newest team, the Sunapee Old Lakers, take on the Walpole Wild Blue. The winners of the 9-inning semifinals will meet Sunday at 1:00 for the CRVBL Cup.

Old-Time Gospel Music at Dummerston Community Center

Brattleboro Taxes and Utilities Due

The first installment of the 2013 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on August 15th, 2013. Payments made after August 15th, 2013 will have an additional 1% interest added to the unpaid balance.

The utility billing is also due on August 15th, 2013. Payments made after August 15th, 2013 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.

Windham County Celebrates its Past on Saturday, August 17

Windham County will celebrate its past with the 4th bi-annual history fair on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 10am – 4pm on the historic Common in Newfane, in front of the County Courthouse.

The event will feature exhibits by the Vermont Historical Society, the Historical Society of Windham County, and the Estey Organ Museum, as well as eight historical societies in Windham County, including those from Brattleboro, Dover, Grafton, Guilford, Jamaica, Putney, Townshend, and Wardsboro. In addition to their exhibits, many of the towns will have their published town histories for sale as well as other historic memorabilia (prints, cards, photographs) of the area.

Was wondering if anyone out there can refer me to a source selling “do it yourself” Lucite or Acrylic embedment kits I can order to preserve a dried specimen in a clear, translucent block maybe 2″ thick x3″ wide and  6′ long. The found object, a crayfish is very fragile but completely dried out. Is this a difficult process with mixing exact proportions while trying to beat the clock before it sets up and how do you avoid air bubbles, is it expensive and what accessories do you need to complete a project?? It is predicted that within the next year we will be forced to make the conversion to digital projection equipment here at the Northfield Drive-In Theatre. The digital conversion is the most significant advancement of technology in the movie industry since the introduction of audio soundtracks in the late 1920s. Just as the introduction of “talkies” led to the end of the “silent” movie era, digital projection technology will mean the end of 35mm film. This will be an enormous expense for us, especially given the fact that we are only a seasonal business.

Sanders: Congress Must Not Hobble Postal Service Rebound

BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 12 – With revenue rebounding, the U.S. Postal Service would have posted a profit for the past three months without an unprecedented requirement that it sink $5.5 billion a year into future retiree health care, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said today.

The latest quarterly report on Postal Service finances showed a $740 million loss, but all of that red ink would have been eliminated and a $660 million profit would have been posted had the Postal Service not been forced to sink money into a system that already has set aside enough to meet the health care needs of retirees for decades to come.

School Daze: Brattleboro Public Schools and Modern Education

School test results are in and again this year, not one of our five public schools made “Adequate Yearly Progress” under the federal definition of that term. To make matters worse, all five, including Oak Grove Elementary, which was only in the Improvement phase last year, are in some form of corrective action. For perspective, ours were among the 73% of other Vermont schools in the same boat, roughly the same as last year.  What is going on?

In an effort to get a handle on both the Brattleboro public school system and public education generally, it was necessary to view the problem from all angles. It all starts with a change in federal education policy via the Bush-era education act, No Child Left Behind, which mandated frequent testing of school age children and something called “teacher accountability.”  Obama’s Race To The Top program builds on No Child by adding incentives (some would call them bribes) to teachers whose students perform well on standardized tests.  There’s also federal education funding at stake, in the form of grants, that are distributed through the program to winning applicants.
