Brattleboro Cardiology Opens New Center in Richards Building

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital announced the Brattleboro Cardiology practice will move into a newly designed Cardiology Center located on the second floor of the Richards Building opening Monday, April 15.

The move merges the offices of cardiologists Michael Cohan, D.O., and Mark Burke, M.D., into a single space. The Center will also serve as an outreach clinic for Daniel Walsh, M.D., a vascular surgeon from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Two BMH Techs Receive Clinical Breast Exam Certification

Diagnostic Imaging Technologists Susan Gautot RT(R,M) and Ellen Wapner RT (R,M,CT,QC) of Brattleboro Memorial Hospital successfully completed requirements to become Certified MammaCare Specialists.

MammaCare is the recognized standard for teaching and performing clinical breast examination in breast cancer screening clinics. The certification authorizes Gautot and Wapner to teach MammaCare practices to women and other health care professionals.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Susan and Ellen to the MammaCare family,” said Dr. H.S. Pennypacker, President of the MammaCare Corporation and one of the original team of scientists who developed MammaCare. “They will make an important contribution to medical education and women’s health throughout Vermont,” he added.

VPT Shows Film on Lilac Ridge

On Thursday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m and Sunday, April 21 at 4:30 p.m. the film, “Lilac Ridge: Life on a Family Farm” will be shown on Vermont Public Television.

From VPT’s website:  “A look at sustainable agriculture through the lens of the Thurber family’s small farm in W. Brattleboro, Vt. When the current generation of owners inherited the farm, they transitioned a traditional dairy operation to organic and added vegetables, flowers and other products. Three generations of the family appear in the film, talking about life on the farm and the changes that have kept it successful.”

Not only is the film about a local farm, it is produced locally by Kate Purdie and Andy Reichsman of Ames Hill Film and Video.

New Doors at Brooks Memorial Library

Due to installation of new doors at the Brooks Memorial Library, the back door next to the Municipal Center parking lot will be closed for the week of April 15th. The Library’s front door on Main Street will be open throughout the week. Those requiring wheelchair access to the building may call the Library at (802) 254-5290 x109 (days) or x0 (evenings) to arrange for access during the construction.

The Ben Carr Music Project at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery April 11

The Ben Carr Music Project presents an intimate concert of ‘ukulele inspired music at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Thursday, April 11 at 7:00 pm. This unplugged, acoustic event will feature solo compositions and quartet performances which fuse the essences of folk, classical and jazz, resulting in what has been described as “a genre-evading journey through sound.”

The BCMP formed in 2011 with the release of Ben’s third solo album “Oakleaf.” For this affair the band features a fine ensemble of musicians including Ben Carr on ‘ukulele and vocals, Joel Eisenkramer on acoustic guitar and indian slide guitar, Josh Maiocco on acoustic guitar and Steve Cady on the double bass.

I was thinking of going in a different direction:

Big step forward for society’s ruling rich adding half of the population to its reservoir of cannon fodder as they heavily invest in WMD and their deployment surrounding Iran, China and Russia. But potential recruits should consider how difficult it will be to avoid self-incriminating themselves in obvious crimes against humanity and peace. An Nuremberg style trial is inevitable. The Secretary of Defense (read War) has, by memorandum, ended the official but unheeded ban on women in combat.

Town Finance Committee / River Garden

Tonight at our regular meeting, the Town Finance Committee voted unanimously to request that the municipality (Brattleboro Town Government) discover and sum up the total amount of public (tax) monies spent to originally create, and to continue since then to maintain, the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, from the time of its inception until the current time.

Sanders, Sherman Introduce Legislation to Break Up Big Banks

WASHINGTON, April 9 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today introduced  to break up banks that have grown so big that the Justice Department fears the financial system would be put at risk if criminal charges were filed. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) proposed a companion bill in the House.

The 10 largest banks in the United States are bigger now than before a taxpayer bailout following the 2008 financial crisis when the Federal Reserve propped up financial institutions with $16 trillion in near zero-interest loans and Congress approved a $700 billion rescue for banks that some considered “too big to fail.” Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. now says the Justice Department may not pursue criminal cases against big banks because filing charges could “have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy.”

Dr. Kathleen McGraw is honored by Franklin District Medical Society as 2013 Community Clinician of the Year

Montague resident Kathleen M. McGraw, M.D. has been honored by her physician peers of the Franklin District Medical Society as the district society’s 2013 Community Clinician of the Year, an honor recognizing her professionalism and contributions as a physician.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community and who stands out as a leading advocate and caregiver. Dr. McGraw will receive the award at the District Society’s annual meeting Thursday April 25 at the Hotel Northampton.
