Compass School Welcomes Prospective Students for Open House

Compass School welcomes prospective students and their families for our Open House on Tuesday, April 30th from 6-8PM. The Open House is hosted by current students, staff, and parents and includes a tour of the school, homemade dinner, and a presentation from Asst Director Eric Rhomberg. This is an informative and fun way to get to know the school and the Compass community.

Exit 1 Spring Planting and Greenup – Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m.

Last fall we planted 1,000 daffodils at Exit 1. They are starting to bloom! We invite you come out to Exit 1 on Greenup Day to help plant more flowers, help greenup the Exit 1 end of Canal Street (if you wish), and admire the daffodils.

Come at 10:00 a.m. to Exit 1, where we will have Greenup bags and coffee and doughnuts on offer. Wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Bring a trowel for planting if you have one. Park at the Outlet Center. Plan to buy more food and drinks, if you need them, at the nearby Irving gas station, Burger King, or Price Chopper. 

Dr. Karen Hein Discusses Heart Disease at BMH Mediterranean Dinner, May 9

Green Mountain Care Board member Dr. Karen Hein will be the guest speaker during Brattleboro Memorial Hospital’s next Mediterranean Dinner, taking place on Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 PM in the Brew Barry Conference Center.

Hein, who lives in nearby Jacksonville, Vermont, will discuss heart disease and its impact on women. In addition to her work for the Green Mountain Care Board, Hein is an adjunct professor of Family/Community Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. In 1987, she founded the first comprehensive HIV/AIDS awareness programs for adolescents in the U.S. and is also the author of AIDS: Trading Fears for Facts: A Guide for Young People (Consumer Reports Books, 1994).

Kurn Hattin Select Choir Chosen To Perform in Live Showcase Finale of WGBY-TV Choral Competition Series, “Together in Song” on Sunday, April 28

The Kurn Hattin Homes Select Choir has been chosen as one of nine regional choruses to appear on the finale of the WGBY public television choral competition series, “Together in Song” on Sunday, April 28. After reviewing the performances of 36 adult and children’s choirs in various categories over four weeks, the judges announced their final selections April 16th.

BURLINGTON, Vt., April 21 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a member of the Senate environment and energy committees and the sponsor of legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, issued the following statement on Monday’s observation of Earth Day:

“Unless we take bold action to reverse climate change, our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to look back on this period in history and ask a very simple question: ‘Where were they? Why didn’t the United States of America lead the international community in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the devastating damage that the scientific community was sure would come?’

Give Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin’s administration an F-  for providing an air pollution permit to a  proposed BIOMASS Plant in a residential neighborhood of Springfield, Vermont, a neighborhood of many low income Vermonters.

This is abuse against low income Vemonters!

Brattleboro Spring Water Main Flushing Schedule

WATER  MAIN  FLUSHING  TO  START

Utilities Division crews will start Spring Flushing of the Town water mains on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 10:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, May 11, 2013. 

NOTE!!  Some daytime flushing will continue throughout the week of May 13, 2013.

Please note that water main flushing will occur at night and also during the day.

Customers are asked to check the flushing schedule closely as flushing causes water discoloration, low water pressure, and in some areas intervals of no water.

Brooks Memorial Library – Front Entrance Not Accessible April 22-25 – Doors Being Replaced

Starting Monday, April 22 through Thursday, April 25,  the Library’s Front Entrance on Main St.  will be not be accessible due to installation of new doors. The book drop (NOT VIDEO DROP)  on Main Street will be accessible all day throughout the construction.  
 
The Library’s Back Entrance next to the Municipal Center parking lot will be open and will accommodate wheelchairs. Handicap parking is in the Municipal Center lot.

Terrifying Times

Just spoke with friends in Boston and Cambridge and they have never seen anything like this before. Everything is shut down; public transporation; taxis; schools; government offices, businesses- everyone in Boston and surrounding towns have been ordered to stay inside. A friend who lives in Cambridge said it’s like a ghost town – nobody on the streets, no sounds of traffic, nothing. Very eery.

I hope that no more innocent people are killed in the ongoing search for the remaining bombing suspect. 19 years old – you wonder how someone becomes this evil; this twisted by such a young age. Frightening times we live in. I wonder if we will ever see peace.

I doubt it will happen in my lifetime – hopefully in my grandson’s.

On Friday, April 19, 7:30 pm, the Brattleboro Music Center will present the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio, at Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, VT.

Bound by their Israeli roots, pianist Alon Goldstein, cellist Amit Peled, and clarinetist Alex Fiterstein formed the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio in 2005. Today, the ensemble’s performances reflect both the special gifts and originality of the three artists as soloists as well as their marvelous sense of ensemble and love of chamber music.
